RALEIGH, NC – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team opened the 2003 ACC season in strong fashion Friday as they defeated NC State 7-0 in Raleigh. Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) had two goals and two assists for a career-high six points as the Cavaliers scored at least seven goals in a conference game for the first time since 1994.

“It is always hard to get a road win in the ACC, so to get one in the opener is a good start for us,’ stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Today our finishing was unbelievable. We have bulit some momentum over the past few weeks that we need to keep going with some tough opponents coming up.”

Virginia (7-1-1, 1-0 ACC) wasted little time getting on the board as Hammond opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Just 35 seconds later, Noelle Keselica (Gaithersbutg, Md.) scored to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage. Ariel Thompson’s (Salem, Va.) goal in the 32nd minute made the score 3-0 just minutes before Hammond’s second goal of the day in the 35th minute gave UVa a 4-0 edge. Gillian Hatch (Whitefish, Bay, Wisc.) concluded the first-half scoring with a goal in the 40th minute.

The Cavaliers would add two more goals in the second half, as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) score in the 48th minute and Jamie Fabrizio (Carmel, Ind.) scored her first career goal in the 73rd minute. In addition to Hammond’s strong performance, Keselica also tied a career high with two assists and four points.

Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) and Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) each played a half in goal for Virginia as the Cavaliers shutout their fourth consecutive opponent. The Virginia defense extended their shutout streak of 418 minutes, which is now the fifth longest streak in school history. Megan Connors made six saves in goal for NC State (5-3-1, 0-1 ACC).

Virginia will conclude a four-game road trip on Monday, September 29, as they visit Richmond. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
