Men’s Team Takes Fifth, Upsets Five Ranked Teams

Led by a 6-7 finish from Will Christian and Walt Kingsbery, the Virginia men’s cross country team finished fifth at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, NC tonight, upsetting five ranked teams, including 10th-ranked Villanova. The male harriers finished with 146 points and Virginia was the first team across the line with three runners as Andy Filachek finished 18th overall. The Cavalier men were also the first ACC team in the final standings, defeating #14 N. C. State and #27 Duke.

Christian and Kingsbery both broke the 26-minute mark in the 8K race, finishing 25:55.3 and 25:59.6, respectively. Filacheck was close behind, clocking a 26:17.0. Dave Vitto and Alex Tatu rounded out the scoring for the Cavaliers, taking 47th and 68th overall. Twenty-two teams and 154 athletes finished the race.

On the women’s side, the Cavailers took seventh overall as a team,. led by first-year Angie Saterstad, who finished 23rd overall. She was followed closely by Jane Maxwell, who ran an 18:39.7 to Saterstad’s 18:38.3 in the 5K event.
