The University of Virginia field hockey team (5-5) battled back to force overtime with just 1:45 on the clock and then withstood a Tribe (5-3) short corner at the end of regulation, but the Hoos still fell to William & Mary 4-3 in overtime. The Tribe scored three goals in the opening 4:08 of the contest but Virginia held them scoreless the remainder of regulation while notching three goals of their own, setting the stage for the finale.
William & Mary jumped on top just 1:37 into the game as Kelly McQuade batted in her own rebound. Sixty-seven seconds later Ginny Sutton intercepted a pass and rocketed in a shot from the top of the circle, putting the Tribe up 2-0. Eighty-four seconds after Sutton scored, she dished the ball down to Jordan Steele, who knocked the ball in the cage for a 3-0 lead with just 4:08 gone in the game.
From there the Cavalier defense held strong, keeping the Tribe off the board the remainder of regulation. Biffy Cornelison (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) intercepted a Tribe pass and sent the ball upfield to Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley), who drew a corner. On the play, Phillips’ initial shot was blocked but she picked up the rebound and sent it to Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) who slipped the ball into the cage for Virginia’s first goal of the game. The Hoos went into halftime facing a 3-1 deficit.
In the second half the Cavaliers with stood four early short corners before Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) sent a long ball up to Katie Nicholson (Allentown, N.J./Clarksburg). Nicholson’s shot went just wide of the cage and on the ensuing 16-yard hit coming out, a William & Mary foul turned the ball over to the Cavaliers. Juli Bojanic’s (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) free hit was tipped up and the Cavaliers drew a penalty corner. Phillips’ intial shot was blocked and Link alertly picked up the loose ball and dragged it into the cage to pull the Cavaliers within one at 3-2.
With just over two minutes to play in regulation Link attacked the circle and drew a corner. Nicholson inserted to Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who stopped for Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Gerfen’s shot ricocheted off a William & Mary defender to the top of the cage, tying the game at 3-3 with 1:45 to play.
The Tribe took the ball to the Cavalier defense and forced a corner as time expired, but the attempt sailed over the cage, sending the game to extra time.
In the extra session the Cavaliers notched the first shot, which was saved by the Tribe’s Stacey Gaenzel. Eventually William & Mary sent a long ball upfield where Kate Baird collected a pass and shot. Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) made the initial save but the rebound popped back to McQuade who scored from short range for the game-winner. Carr made 11 saves in the game.
Virginia next travels to College Park, Md. to face the Terrapins. Game time at Maryland is 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 4.
