Cavalier Women’s Tennis Opens Season Strong at Deacon Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team opened the 2003 fall season with a strong performance in the first day of the Deacon Classic at Wake Forest. The Cavaliers had six singles players reach the semifinals and all three doubles teams reach the quarterfinal round.

In singles Flight A, Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals. James won both matches in straight sets, while Fritz-Krockow had to rally after losing the first set of her opening round match to win in three sets.

In singles Flight B, Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest Ill.) won her two matches to reach the semifinals. Virginia also had two semifinalists in Flight C, where both Dora and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) both won two matches. In flight D, first-year Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) won her first career match to reach the semifinals.

In doubles play, all three Cavalier team won their opening match to advance to the quarterfinals. In flight A, Fritz-Krockow and Bruch along with James and Shannon Stough (Hot Springs, Ark.) were victorious. The Bechliwanis twins won their opening match to advance in Flight B.

The Deacon Classic will continue at the Leighton Tennis Center on Saturday and run through Sunday.
