Cavs in the Community

Oct. 3, 2003

It’s hard to believe that the semester has reached a half-way point. Not only have our student-athletes been preparing for mid-term exams and daydreaming of post-season glory, but they have also been busy giving back to people in our local community.

This month our student-athletes have made much appreciated visits to the Children’s Medical Center at University Hospital. This program is headed by 2nd year football player Davon Robb and 4th year softball player Heather Field and has allowed student-athletes the opportunity to spend a few hours per week with children whose health has caused them to make University Hospital a temporary, and in some cases, a permanent home. The student-athletes whom have already taken part in this event are: Davon Robb, Bryan White, Chris Canty, Art Thomas, and Kase Luzar from football, swimmers Bo Greenwood, Ryan Mooney and Betsey Downey, and track and field’s Kelly Behan. However, the Children’s Medical Center visits haven’t been the only service that our student-athletes have provided.

Field hockey players Katie Jo Gerfen and Katherine Blair, along with Chip Rogers (from Sports Information) took time to go to Louisa County High School for the school’s Career Day event. The three demonstrated field hockey skills and talked to the students about their lives in college athletics at the University of Virginia. Also, the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took part in the American Heart Association Walk on Sunday, October 5th from 1 pm – 2 pm at University Hall.

On a different front, graduating Student-athletes are busy perfecting and handing in their resumes for VAF’s Business Playbook which will be published at the end of the semester.
