CHAPEL HILL, NC – The Virginia men’s golf team shot a 307 (+19) in the first round of the Franklin Street Partners Invitational on Saturday to tie for eighth place.
Junior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) paced the Cavaliers with a 75 (+3) to put him in a tie for 19th place. Senior Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) shot a 77 (+5), as did freshman Mark Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) to put them in a tie for 26th. Sophomore Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and sophomore Craig Cook-Stevenson (Sutton-Coldfield, Eng.) are tied for 30th after each shot a round of 78 (+6).
Host North Carolina shot a 287 (-1) to take the overall team lead. Georgia Southern is in second after a 288 (E). Alabama and Kentucky are tied for third at 292 (+4). Toshi Hirata of Georgia Southern shot a 65 (-7) to finish in first place overall. North Carolina’s Ted Smith is in second after a 66 (-6), and Kentucky’s John Holmes shot a 68 (-4) to come in third.
Action will resume at Finley Golf Course Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
