CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 5 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team scored two goals in the final five minutes to post a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Florida State in front of a season-high 1,249 fans at Kl?ckner Stadium. Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) scored a pair of goals and Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) tallied the game-winner with 27 seconds remaining to lift Virginia to its seventh straight win.

“The crowd was exceptional tonight especially when we got the equalizer,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “They lifted us up toward the end of the game. We didn’t move the ball as well as I would have liked tonight, but give Florida State credit for that. We started to play our game in the last 15 minutes and once we got the equalizer, I felt confident we could get the game-winner in the last four minutes. Games like these can really build a team’s confidence when you rally to beat a quality team.”

The first half had few scoring chances, but the Cavaliers (9-1-1, 2-0 ACC) would strike first just before halftime. In the 45th minute, Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) served a corner kick into the box that Hammond headed for the goal that gave UVa the 1-0 halftime edge. The Seminoles (6-5-0, 1-1 ACC) would counter early in the second half. Florida State tied the game in the 50th minute when Camie Bybee deflected a shot off a corner into the net to bring FSU even. Just nine minutes later, Florida State would take the lead when Kristen Boyce headed a Amber Tollefson cross to give FSU the 2-1 lead. Florida State would cling to that lead until the 85th minute when Hammond’s near post run was found by Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.). Hammond took the through ball and hit it past the charging Seminole keeper and just inside the near post. With the momentum from the tying goal, UVa continued to pressure the FSU defense and got the winner in the 90th minute as Thompson one-timed a loose ball in the box into the upper corner.

Overall Virginia outshot Florida State 18-13. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made a season-high six saves in net for Virginia, while Kerry York made five saves for the Seminoles, whose five-game winning streak was halted.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Harrisonburg to play intrastate foe James Madison.
