WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Five members of the Virginia women’s tennis team won semifinal matches at the Deacon Classic Saturday at Wake Forest University. The five players will compete for flight championships on Sunday as the Cavaliers look to sweep all four singles flights.
In singles Flight A, second-year Kristen James advanced to Sunday’s final with a three-set win over Anat Elzari of Virginia Tech in the semifinals. She will play Ashlee Davis of Wake Forest in the final. Davis defeated Cavalier Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) in Saturday’s other semifinal. Second-year Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) advanced to the final of singles Flight B with a win over Virginia Tech’s Felice Lam. In Flight C, both Dora and Marta Bechiwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won semifinal matches to advance to the final. First-year Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) posted a straight set win over Becky Mitchell of Georgia State to reach the final.
The tournament concludes Sunday at the Leighton Tennis Center.
