MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – University of Virginia crews won the varsity eight and varsity four competitions as the Cavaliers’ women’s rowing team opened its 2003 fall season at the Head of the Mon Regatta on Saturday (Oct. 4). UVa crews also finished second in the novice eight and the varsity four.
In the varsity eight competition, Virginia’s “A” boat finished with a time of 19:38.46 and Clemson’s “A” boat was second in 20:07.71. Duke’s “A” boat finished third (20:16.68) followed by Duke’s “B” boat (20:19.69), Virginia’s “B” boat (20:29.82) and West Virginia’s “A” boat (20:51.44). Virginia’s “C” boat finished ninth (21:21.86), UVa’s “E” boat was tenth (21:32.34) and the Cavaliers’ “D” boat finished 12th (21:54.58).
The crew of Virginia’s varsity eight “A” boat was comprised of Betty Shumaker (coxswain), Yvonne Epp, Renee Albers, Jen Reck, Sara Lippa, Margaret Matia, Lindsay Shoop, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Melanie Kok.
UVa’s “B” boat won the varsity four competition with a time of 22:03.16 followed by Virginia’s “A” boat in a time of 22:12.30. Clemson’s “A” boat finished third (22:23.08) followed by Duke’s “A” boat (22:46.14), Virginia’s “C” boat (22:47.03) and Clemson’s “B” boat (22:49.56). Virginia’s “D” boat finished ninth (23:03.78), UVa’s “E” boat was 12th (23:24.66) and the Cavaliers’ “F” boat was 16th (24:23.00).
The crew of Virginia’s varsity four “B” boat was made up of Danielle Sewell (coxswain), Yvonne Epp, Renee Albers, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Melanie Kok, while the crew of UVa’s varsity four “A” boat was comprised of Betty Shumaker (coxswain), Jen Reck, Lindsay Shoop, Margaret Matia and Sara Lippa. The Cavaliers’ varsity four “C” crew was made up of Karen Richardson (coxswain), Carolyn McMillan, Kathryn Waller, Mary Dobmeier and Jessica Haury. The crew of Virginia’s varsity four “D” boat was comprised of Launa Forehand (coxswain), Katie Yrazabal, Crystal MacLeod, Beth Clark and Libby McCann.
UVa finished second in the novice eight with the same crew that finished 10th in the varsity eight competition. Clemson’s “A” boat won the novice eight competition with a time of 21:20.47 and Virginia was second in 21:53.91. Louisville finished third (22:58.29) followed by Clemson’s “B” boat (23:04.43), Duke (24:13.42), West Virginia’s “B” boat (28:05.95) and West Virginia’s “A” boat (28:39.36).
“The racing was competitive,” said Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer. “I was pleased we won the varsity eight, and finished first and second in the varsity four.”
The Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action on October 19 when the Cavaliers compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass.
