CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team got back to its winning ways and recorded a 4-1 victory over the visiting Alabama A&M Bulldogs in a non-conference match in front of 1,107 spectators at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. Virginia scored a pair of goals in each period to help the Cavaliers break a two-game losing skid and get back to .500 (5-5-0) on the year.

UVa scored the first goal of the match at 26:13 when Paul Johnson (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) scored his first goal of the season and the third goal of his career. Johnson’s goal was set-up by teammates Hunter Freeman (Allen, Texas/Bradenton Academy) and Mike Littlefield Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park). Freeman sent a free kick into the box where Littlefield got a head on the ball for a shot. Littlefield’s shot was deflected and Johnson found himself in the right place at the right time and chipped in the live ball to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Freeman’s assist was his first collegiate point and assist of his career.

Just under two minutes later (28:00), Virginia’s Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va./Godwin) scored the eventual game-winning goal when he headed in a cross from Joe Vide (Raleigh, N.C./Bavarian International School) to make it a 2-0 match. Cristman’s goal, his third of the season, was also his third game-winning score of the year. Vide’s assist was his second of the season. The Cavaliers would take their two-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.

Virginia extended its lead to 3-0 at 52:45 in the second half when Phillip Long (Wilson, N.C./Hunt) scored his first goal of the year (the fifth goal of his career) on a free kick from about 20 yards out. The Cavaliers kept their 3-0 lead until the 57:49 mark when Alabama A&M’s Keston Lewis put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Lewis took a shot, gathered the deflected ball on his own shot attempt, and then beat UVa’s goalkeeper for a goal. Lewis’ score made it a 3-1 match.

However, Virginia added an insurance goal at 77:17 to make it a 4-1 contest when Chris Megaloudis (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) scored his first goal of the season (the third goal of his career). UVa’s John Hartman (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) got the play started when he sent a cross into the box that Sean Hinkle (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) gathered and then passed to Megaloudis. Megaloudis then touched the ball past Jjombwe for the Cavaliers’ fourth goal of the match. Hinkle’s assist was the first of his collegiate career and Hartman’s assists was his second of the season.

UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) pulled in three saves and the Cavalier defense made one team save in the victory. AA&M goalkeeper Andrew Jjombwe made a game-high 11 saves in a losing effort.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 5-5-0 overall. The loss drops Alabama A&M to 3-5-0 on the season. UVa is now 2-0-0 all-time against AA&M in men’s soccer.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, October 11th when Virginia hosts the Clemson Tigers in an Atlantic Coast Conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium.
