WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team closed out play at the Deacon Classic, their first event of the season, Sunday at Wake Forest. The Cavaliers won singles titles in two of the four flights.
In singles Flight D, first-year Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) defeated Ana Simanca of Winthrop in a third set tie-breaker to win the singles Flight D championship. In singles Flight C, Cavalier third-years Dora and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) were scheduled to meet in the flight final, but did not play and split the title. In singles Flights A and B, Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) were defeated in Sunday’s finals.
