GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two Cavalier football players earned ACC Player of the Week accolades on Monday.
Tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (Freeport, N.Y) earned Offensive Lineman of the Week. At North Carolina, Ferguson graded out at 90 percent, following his best performance of the season. The sophomore helped the Cavaliers rush for 229 yards, marking the third time UVa has rushed for more than 200 yards this fall. He also allowed no sacks as UVa’s quarterbacks completed 20-of-23 passes for 286 yards. UVa’s 515 yards of offense are the most under Al Groh.
The ACC honor is the second of Ferguson’s career and the second this season. He was also recognized following the win at Western Michigan.
Linebacker Darryl Blackstock (Newport News, Va.) was also tabbed with the Defensive Back of the Week honor. The sophomore had six tackles, including four solos, and two sacks in the 38-13 win at North Carolina. It’s the second multi-sack game of Blackstock’s career. The linebacker’s two tackles (sacks) for a loss of 16 yards helped the UVa defense hold the Tar Heels to just 58 yards rushing, the fewest UVa has allowed in nine years. He also recovered a fumble in the second quarter, leading to a UVa field goal. Blackstock also recorded three quarterback hurries. Virginia held a high-powered UNC offense to 13 points, less than half its average points per game (27). The Tar Heels also gained only 265 yards of total offense, 150 yards less than their average coming in (415 ypg).
The ACC honor is the second in Blackstock’s career. He earned ACC honors for the first time last season following his performance against Clemson.
The Virginia Cavaliers (4-1, 3-0 ACC) travel to Clemson (3-2, 1-1 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a Noon game. Jefferson Pilot Sports will televise the game.
