HARRISONBURG, Va – The No. 4 Virginia women’s soccer team extended its win streak to eight Tuesday night as they defeated James Madison 1-0 in Harrisonburg. Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) scored her first goal of the season in the 82nd minute as UVa secured its sixth one-goal win of the year.

“Every time we play JMU we expect a tough, physical game and we got that tonight,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I think we were more patient in the second half and got some more chances. Their goalkeeper played well and saved a couple sure goals. It was going to take a great shot to beat her and fortunately Sarah hit a great shot.”

The Cavaliers (10-1-1, 2-0) controlled the possession in the first half and outshot the Dukes (3-8-1, 1-2) 7-1 before halftime. However, Virginia could not convert any of the chances they created and the game went to break scoreless. The Cavaliers continued their pressure in the second creating chance after chance, but the JMU defense, led by goalkeeper Jessica Hussey, kept UVa off the board for much of the half. However, Virginia finally broke through in the 82nd minute, when a loose ball in box found Huffman at the far post. She one-timed the ball to the upper corner of the far post for the game’s lone goal and her first goal of the season. The Virginia defense stood tall for the remainder of the game to preserve the shutout and secure the win.

Overall, Virginia outshot the Dukes 18-5 and had 12 corner kicks to JMU’s one. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made two saves in posting her fourth shutout of the season. Hussey made five saves at the other end for James Madison and the Dukes had two team saves.

The Cavaliers return home on Saturday, October 11 as they host Wake Forest in the first match of an ACC home doubleheader. Game time at Kl?ckner Stadium is 5:00 p.m with the men’s game against Clemson to follow.
