The University of Virginia field hockey team played 70 minutes of shutout hockey tonight, defeating Radford 4-0 tonight at University Hall Turf Field. The Cavaliers (6-6) allowed the Highlanders (3-8) only seven shots, including only one in the first half. Virginia’s defensive effort was led by Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) who started in the cage and played 60 minutes, notching five saves. She gave way to teammate Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) who played the final 10 minutes to help the Cavaliers preserve the shutout. On the offensive side of the ball, Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored a pair of goals while Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley) and Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) both scored a goal and an assist.
Virginia got on the board first as the Hoos worked the ball downfield where a Radford foul gave the Cavaliers a short corner. Gerfen’s shot was tipped over the endline by the Radford keeper, giving UVa a long hit. On the restart Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) drew a short corner. On the play, Gerfen’s shot was tipped to the roof of the cage by a Radford defender, giving the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish.
Five minutes later a combination of Virginia passes brought the ball to the 25 where Phillips dribbled to the top of the circle and lifted the ball over the Radford keeper on a scoop, giving the Hoos a 2-0 lead 12:13 into the game.
Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) tackled a Radford forward at the 25 yard line and started a Virginia possession in which Flynn brought the ball along the endline into the circle where she drew a short corner. Again a Gerfen shot was tipped to the roof, this time by Flynn, giving Virginia a 3-0 lead that they took into the second half.
Midway through the second stanza, the Cavaliers brought the ball upfield where Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) took a free hit at the top of the circle that was tipped up by a Radford defender, giving the Cavaliers a short corner. On the play, Flynn tipped a Phillips shot to the far side of the cage for the Hoos’ fourth goal of the game.
With 10 minutes to play, Blair came on in place of Carr and kept Radford off the scoreboard.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, Oct. 10 as they face the Bobcats of Quinnipiac University at 7:00 on the University Hall Turf Field.
