The University of Virginia field hockey team (7-6) scored once in each half and held back a rally by Quinnipiac (4-8) tonight in Charlottesville, defeating the Bobcats 2-1. Virginia scored on a direct short corner by Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) to take a 2-0 lead and then denied the Bobcats after they scored with under five minutes to play, holding on for the win. Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made a defensive save early in the second half to preserve the lead, and Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) made six saves to help Virginia win.
Virginia got on the board in the first half as Dana Anderson (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) helped bring the ball upfield where she dished it to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown), who attacked and was fouled just outside the circle. On the ensuing free hit, Bojanic’s strike was tipped into the boards by Allie Flynn for her team-leading eighth goal. Virginia took the 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, another Bojanic free hit from the backfield went up to Anderson, who again passed off to Nicholson. Nicholson drove to the circle and sent the ball to Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), who drew a short corner for the Cavaliers. On the play, Nicholson inserted the ball to Sarah Miller (LItitz, Pa./Warwick), who stopped the ball for Gerfen. Gerfen’s shot was deflected into the cage by a Quinnipiac defender, giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead with 28:14 to play in regulation.
Quinnipiac broke up the shutout in the 65th minute when Chelsea Osbrey broke down the far sideline and swept the ball into the circle, where Kristen McCarthy tipped it into the cage to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 4:28 on the clock. The Cavaliers warded off one penalty corner and then held on for the 2-1 win.
Virginia stays at home to play #2 UNC on Sunday, October 12. Game time is 1:00 pm and will be followed by a game between Saint Francis and Longwood Universities.
