CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 4 Virginia women’s soccer team rallied from one-goal deficits twice in the second half to tie No. 16 Wake Forest 2-2 Saturday night at Kl?ckner Stadium. With the comeback, the Cavaliers extended their unbeaten streak to ten games.

“I am extremely proud of this team in the way that they never give up,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We keep getting late goals to win and tie games against quality opponents and that is the attitude good teams possess. We had chances to win the game in overtime, but when you trail with two minutes to play and get a tie, you are glad to get a decision.”

The Cavaliers (10-1-2, 2-0-1) controlled the tempo in the first half and outshot the Demon Deacons (9-2-2, 0-1-1) 4-1 during the scoreless first half. The second half started like the first with neither team registering many chances until Wake capitalized in the 66th minute. Sarah Kozey took a rebound out of the box and from 20 yards out fired a shot into the net to give Wake a 1-0 lead. Virginia would counter nine minutes later as Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill.) send a cross that was flicked on by Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) to Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). Foley took one dribble then blasted the ball into the far side of the net to tie the game. The game would be deadlocked for just three minutes as Kozey made a run down the right side, received a pass from Lindsey Griffin and send a low shot that hit the far post and went in. The Cavaliers rallied again and tied the game in the 89th minute when Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) took a corner kick that has header by Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) off the far post and as the rebound settled on the goal line, Lane tapped the ball in for the equalizer. In overtime, the Cavaliers used the momentum of the tying goal to create several chances, but the Wake defense stood firm and the game ended in the 2-2 draw.

Overall, Virginia outshot the Deacons 11-7 and had 10 corner kicks to Wake’s six. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made three saves for Virginia while Kenna Healy made four saves at the other end for Wake Forest.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, October 14 as they host Maryland. Game time at Kl?ckner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
