Virginia Volleyball Posts 3-1 Victory Over N.C. State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Fourth-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) tallied 19 points and fourth-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) added 15 points in leading the Virginia volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-26, 30-18, 26-30, 30-11) victory over N.C. State Saturday (October 11) at Memorial Gym. With the win UVa improves to 19-4 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. N.C. State drops to 6-13 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

With the victory, Virginia extended its winning streak over the Wolfpack to seven matches and UVa has also won 16 of the last 17 meetings. The Cavaliers’ 19 wins are the most in a season since 1999 when UVa was 19-12. Virginia’s 19 wins are also one more than the 2001 and 2002 seasons combined.

Davis recorded her 19 points with a match-high 16 kills, two service aces and two blocks. She also recorded eight digs. Boyle hit a match-high .600 with 11 kills and also added four blocks and two aces for her 15 points. First-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Rosharon, Texas/Elkins) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a team-best 15 digs. Osco also had three blocks and two aces. Second-year outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) contributed nine digs, five kills, two aces and two digs to Virginia’s winning effort.

First-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) also notched a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs. In addition, she equaled her career high with four of UVa’s season-best 15 service aces. Eight different Cavaliers recorded a service ace in the match. Fourth-year All-ACC libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) was the third UVa player to reach double figures in digs with 10. She also added three assists and a kill.

Maya Mapp led the Wolfpack with nine kills and four blocks, while Julia Reis had eight kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Caroline Frede paced all players with 18 digs.

The Cavaliers only hit .155 in the match, but held N.C. State to a .006 hitting percentage. The Wolfpack had only one more kill (40) than hitting errors (39). UVa had 50 kills in the match. Virginia held a 15-6 edge in service aces, while N.C. State held a slight 75-71 advantage in digs. Both teams had eight blocks.

Virginia will conclude its four-match homestand on Friday, October 17 when it hosts Maryland at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym. Admission is free of charge.
