Virginia’s Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) made a career-high 18 saves in today’s game, but second-ranked UNC (13-1) was persistent and defeated the Cavaliers 6-0 today in Charlottesville. The Tar Heels scored goals on three short corners in the first half and added two more goals from field play to take a 5-0 lead at the break, and Carolina’s Brooke Miller added a goal in the second half of play for the final result of 6-0. Virginia (7-7) also had a defensive save from Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).
Carolina drew the first corner of the game as they attacked along the endline, and on the play Kelsey Keeran inserted to Laura Douglas, who stopped the ball for Rachel Dawson. Dawson drag flicked the ball into the cage for UNC’s first goal, which came at the 13:00 mark of the game. Three minutes later the Heels drew another corner and after Dawson’s initial shot was saved, Katy Potter was there to stick in the rebound for a 2-0 lead. Carolina struck again on another short corner as Carey Fetting-Smith sent a ball into the circle that was tipped into the cage by Keeran, putting UNC up 3-0 at 23:08 and forcing the Cavaliers to take a timeout.
UNC’s Amber Chambers assisted on the next two goals, sending a lead ball upfield for Kerry Falgowski, who dribbled the ball into the circle and shot to the boards, giving UNC a 4-0 lead with 9:41 to play in the half. Four minutes later Chambers took the ball up the left side of the field and dished the ball into Dawson in the circle, and Dawson converted for a 5-0 lead, which Carolina took into the break.
In the second half, Miller notched the only goal of the stanza as she dribbled down the center of the pitch and scored an unassisted goal at the 48:42 mark of the game, giving Carolina a final score of 6-0.
Virginia continues its homestand with a game against Cornell on Tuesday, October 14. Game time against the Big Red is 12:00.
