CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 5 ranked Virginia women’s soccer battled the No. 19 Maryland Terrapins and the constant driving rain at Kl?ckner Stadium and posted a 1-0 win Tuesday night. The Cavaliers used a first-half goal by Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) to build what was practically an insurmountable lead in the wet conditions that got worse as the game progressed.
“Tonight’s game was about two quality teams playing a game that barely resembled soccer,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We were fortunate to get a goal before the conditions became almost impossible to play in. We had a similar situation in the NCAA Tournament at West Virginia last year and our players did a great job of calling on that experience and adjusting to the conditions.”
The rain was light in the first half as the Cavaliers (11-1-2, 3-0-1 ACC) would score the game’s lone goal. In the 21st minute, Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) sent a cross that was flicked into space by Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.). The ball was loose inside the six-yard box and just before Maryland keeper Kristen Barnhill could grab it, Hammond touched the ball out of her reach and back-heeled the ball into the vacated net.
In the second half, the rain increased and standing water occupied much of the field. The conditions made moving the ball almost impossible and neither team could mount any scoring chances for long periods of time. After both teams adjusted to the conditions, there were several chances at each end, but neither team could capitalize and the game ended 1-0.
With the victory, Virginia extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games (9-0-2) and stayed unbeaten in ACC play. Maryland dropped to 7-5-1 overall, 1-3 in the conference. Overall, both teams had ten shots in the contest with each team having a majority of their shots in the half when they had the wind at their back. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made a five saves in net for Virginia, while Barnhill made four saves for the Terrapins.
Virginia returns to action Saturday night, as they travel to Durham to play No. 15 Duke.
