Virginia’s Erin Hayes (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley) was a factor on both sides of the ball today as she notched a defensive save in the first half and then scored a goal in the second half as the Cavaliers (8-7) defeated Cornell 4-0 today in Charlottesville. Cornell (4-9) keeper Kaitlin Tierney had 12 saves but Virginia launched a season-high 22 shots today, and Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) and Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) combined for Virginia’s third shutout of the season.
After an early flurry by the Big Red in which Hayes notched her defensive save, the Cavaliers’ Lindsey Selfridge (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) started the first scoring play for the Cavaliers as she took a through pass along the right sideline to the cage and was tripped from behind as she entered the circle, drawing a penalty stroke for the Hoos. Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) deposited the ball to the nets 9:36 into the game to give Virginia a lead they would not relinquish. The Cavaliers got off nine more shots in the half but could not convert, and Virginia took a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half again the Big Red had an early flurry, but Carr was up to the task and kept Cornell off the boards. Midway thrugh the half, Dana Anderson (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) intercepted a ball at the offensive 25 and sent it up to Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), who rifled a shot. Tierney saved the shot but the rebound sat and Hayes picked it out from Tierney and shoved it in the cage for Virginia’s second goal.
Five minutes later Link intercepted a Cornell transfer and again took a shot that was saved initially by Tierney. Miller was there for a pair of shots and stuck in her own rebound, putting the Cavaliers up 3-0 with 11:30 to play in regulation.
With seven minutes to go, a Cornell shot went just wide of the goal, giving the Cavaliers a 16-yard hit coming out. A quick restart by Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) sent the ball to Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield). Bojanic laid the ball up the left sideline for Link, who caught up to it and passed it to the endline to Selfridge. Selfridge crossed the ball to Lindsay O’Bannon (Midland, Va./Fauquier), who put the ball in the boards for Virginia’s final goal of the game, which came with 6:47 to go. The assist was Selfridge’s first career point.
Blair came on for Carr with six minutes to play and denied a Cornell shot with under five minutes to play, preserving the shutout.
The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, October 19 with a game against Saint Francis. Game time against the Red Flash will be at 1:00 at the Turf Field.
