CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Kate Kreager (Chantilly, Va.) and sophomore Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) were elected as team captains by their teammates for the 2003-04 basketball season, head coach Debbie Ryan announced on Thursday.

A walk-on, Kreager joined the Cavaliers after an open tryout last fall. The 6-3 forward, who transferred to UVa for academics in August 2002, played basketball at Xavier for two seasons where she averaged 13.6 ppg. Due to the NCAA transfer rule, Kreager sat out last season while taking classes. The politics major earned Academic All-ACC honors.

Sardin, a 6-1 forward, saw action in 22 contests last year with six starts as a freshman. She averaged 2.7 rebounds in 10.0 minutes per game. She scored a season-best nine points at Wake Forest and grabbed a season-best nine rebounds in the win over St. Joseph’s.

The honor is the first for both players.

The Cavaliers, which finished last season at 17-14 with a 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, open the 2003-04 campaign at home with UNC Greensboro on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Fans can get a preview of the 2004 Cavaliers as the team will play a home exhibition contest against the Premier Players on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at University Hall.
