DURHAM, N.C. – The #25 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team had its three-game winning streak snapped after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Duke Blue Devils in an Atlantic Coast Conference match at Duke’s Koskinen Stadium. Things looked bright for the Cavaliers early on and UVa took a 1-0 lead just over three and a half minutes into the match, but it was all Blue Devils after that on the scoreboard as Duke scored three unanswered goals to pull away.
Virginia scored the first goal of the match and took an early 1-0 lead just 3:39 into the contest when Mike Littlefield (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) and Will Hall (Shirley, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) found teammate Drew Harrison (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) with a pass. Harrison one-timed Littlefield’s feed into the right side of the Duke goal. Harrison’s goal was the first of his collegiate career.
UVa held on to its 1-0 lead for nearly 20 minutes until the 23:52 mark when Duke tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by the Blue Devils’ Chris Loftus. Duke’s Jordan Cila fed a pass to teammate Owoicho Adogwa, who then played a ball back out to Loftus who one-timed it into the left side of the UVa goal for the score. The two teams would go into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Blue Devils turned up their offense in the second half and took their first lead of the game with 34:00 remaining in the second period when Loftus scored his second goal of the match at 56:00. Duke’s Blake Camp and Adogwa set-up Loftus’ goal to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead. Just over 11 minutes later, Duke extended its lead to 3-1 when Camp scored a header off of a corner kick taken by Cila. Camp’s goal gave the Blue Devils a two-goal cushion it would not relinquish.
UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) made three saves in the loss, while the Blue Devils’ Justin Trowbridge pulled in four saves in the victory.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 7-6-0 overall, 3-2-0 in the ACC. The victory improves Duke’s record to 4-8-1 overall, 2-3-0 in the conference.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Friday, October 24th when Virginia host the Liberty Flames in a non-conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. Duke will resume home action on Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 PM with a non-conference match against Dartmouth.
