Cavalier Women’s Soccer Falls at Duke 1-0

DURHAM, NC – The No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team had its 11 game unbeaten streak snapped Saturday night, falling 1-0 to No. 15 Duke at Koskinen Stadium. Shelley Marshall scored the game’s lone goal in the 34th minute as the Blue Devils handed the Cavaliers just their second loss of the season.

The Blue Devils struck in the first half to score the game’s lone goal. Marshall scored off assists from Casey McCluskey and Carmen Bognanno. The Blue Devils took that lead to the half and the Cavaliers trailed at the break for just the second time this year. In the second half, Virginia tried to rally to tie the game, but the Duke defense, led by goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir held the Cavaliers scoreless.

Overall Duke outshot Virginia 8-4, holding the Cavaliers to a season-low shot total. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made one save for Virginia while Helgadottir made two for Duke.

The Cavaliers return home on Tuesday, October 21 as they host Liberty. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
