BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Virginia’s youth eight crew finished first in that competition and UVa’s crew finished fifth in the championship four on Sunday (Oct. 19) to highlight the Virginia women’s rowing team’s performance at the Head of the Charles Regatta. Virginia’s championship eight crew finished 11th in that competition.
UVa’s youth eight crew finished with a time of 17:06.988 to finish first among 55 crews. The Community Rowing, Inc., Youth Program crew (17:15.106) finished second. The Cavaliers’ youth eight crew was comprised of coxswain Katie Hilton, Libby McCann, Ashley Jones, Kerry Maher, Heather Gardner, Victoria Moore, Meredith Danberg-Ficarelli, Anna Samaha and Annemarie Pitts.
The London Training Center crew won the championship four with a time of 17:27.356 with the Vesper Boat Club second (17:45.318), Brown third (18:04.502), the University of Victoria fourth (18:17.217) and Virginia fifth (18:20.152). The Cavaliers finished second among United States collegiate crews in the 22-crew competition. UVa’s championship four crew was made up of Danielle Sewell, Carolyn McMillan, Kathryn Waller, Katie Yrazabal and Crystal MacLeod.
In the championship eight, Virginia finished 11th with a time of (16:34.726). The London Training Center crew finished first with a time of 15:31.082 and a USRowing crew finished second (15:49.558). The Cavaliers finished seventh among United States collegiate crews in the 40-crew competition. UVa’s championship eight crew was comprised of Betty Shumaker, Jennifer Reck, Renee Albers, Yvonne Epp, Sara Lippa, Margaret Matia, Lindsay Shoop, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Melanie Kok.
“We had a fantastic effort from the youth eight crew today,” said Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer. “Our crew finished three seconds off the course record for the event, but the record was established with a tail wind. There was no tail wind today.
“The championship four crew gave a great effort in its competition and the championship eight crew rowed great for about two-thirds of the race before faltering.”
The next competition for the Virginia women’s rowing team is at the Princeton Chase on Sunday (Oct. 26) in Princeton, N.J.
