Virginia (9-7) notched its second consecutive shutout today with a 10-0 defeat of Saint Francis (0-14), stretching the Cavaliers’ streak to 161:18, thanks in part to a pair of saves by Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and a defensive save by Aly Curmaci (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail). On the offensive side of the ball, the Cavaliers’ 10 goals was the highest output since 1999. The Cavaliers’ Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley) had a hat trick, the first of her collegiate career. First-year Jen McCallum (Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) had a pair of goals, the first two of her career, in today’s game, while Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), Lindsay O’Bannon (Midland, Va./Fauquier), and Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) each had a pair of assists.
The Cavaliers jumped on top in the first five minutes as Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) intercepted a Red Flash pass and sent the ball upfield to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown), who drew a corner. After the Hoos drew a second corner on the play, Gerfen hit a shot to the boards off assists from Nicholson and Miller. Midway through the period the Cavaliers doubled their lead as Biffy Cornelison (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) stepped up and intercepted a Saint Francis pass, sending the ball up to Phillips, who drew a corner. On the corner, Gerfen took the set from Miller, dribbled in, and sent the ball over to Link on the left side of the cage. Link fired the ball to the boards for a 2-0 Virginia lead at 21:42.
Virginia continued to attack the Red Flash backfield and on a restart just outside the circle, La Vigne sent a ball through the circle where O’Bannon tipped it to the roof of the cage for a 3-0 with just over seven minutes to play in the half. Three minutes later Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) blocked a Saint Francis dribble and took the ball into the circle. Flynn’s shot was saved but the rebound popped out to Miller, who scored from seven yards out for the Cavaliers’ fourth goal of the day.
The Cavaliers scored once more before the end of the first half as Mia Link (Factoryville, Pa./Factoryville) took the ball along the endline and got off a shot that was saved by Red Flash starting keeper Theresa King. Flynn collected the rebound for Virginia and shot, subsequently drawing a corner for the Hoos. On the restart, Miller bumped the ball over to Phillips, who notched her first goal of the game 2:24 before the end of the first half and put Virginia up 5-0.
Virginia wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, as Flynn tackled the ball just outside the circle and worked the ball down to the endline with Link. Link slotted the ball to Flynn, who hit a shot from a very short angle into the cage for a goal 34 seconds into the second period of play.
Nine minutes later Virginia drew another corner and on the play, Gerfen’s direct shot was stopped by a Saint Francis defender’s body and Virginia was awarded a penalty stroke. Phillips converted the stroke for her second goal of the game and a 7-0 lead with 25:36 to play.
McCallum notched her first collegiate point five minutes later after the Cavaliers worked the ball up high to the left corner, where O’Bannon sent a through ball into the circle. McCallum ran onto the ball and shot on the run, sending the ball to the nets for Virginia’s eighth goal of the game.
After a brief Saint Francis flurry that was cleared out of the circle by Curmaci, Virginia took a free hit from the far sideline at midfield. LaVigne’s pass found Phillips on the left side of the circle. Phillips collected the ball and sent it to the cage for the Cavaliers’ ninth goal of the game, completing her hat trick.
The Hoos closed out the scoring less than a minute later as again they brought the ball to the upper left corner and O’Bannon crossed the ball into the center of the circle, where McCallum touched the ball into the boards for her second goal of the game and her career.
The Cavaliers’ 10 goals was the highest output since Oct. 24, 1999 when Virginia defeated Appalachian State 10-0. Blair, who came on in the second half, made two saves to preserve the shutout. Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) did not have to make any saves in her 35 minutes of action in the first half. Miller’s two assists gives her 10 on the year, the fifth-highest total in school history for a second-year.
Virginia will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for a game against top-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 26.
