CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team returned home Tuesday night and posted a 6-0 win over Liberty at Kl?ckner Stadium. Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) had two goals and an assist and Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) had a goal and two assists as the Cavaliers improved to 12-2-2 on the year.
“I think we had a good team effort tonight,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Everyone played and everyone contributed tonight. This was important for us to get our momentum back after the loss on Saturday. We have a big game this weekend and we need to come out with the same mentality we had tonight.”
The Cavaliers dominated the game from the start, but it took until the 24th minute to solve the Flame defense. Kara Frederick (Woodbridge, Va.), making her first career start, scored on a header off a corner kick. The Cavaliers would convert on another corner in the 32nd minute as Hammond’s header made the score 2-0. Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) closed out the first half scoring in the 42nd minute as she volleyed a cross into the net for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Virginia came out firing in the second half and Hammond scored her second of the night five minutes into the half as she blasted a Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) cross just inside the far post. Gusick assisted on the next Cavalier goal six minutes later as her point blank shot was saved by Liberty keeper Natalie Mayer, but the rebound went to Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill.), who hit it into the vacated net. Foley closed out the scoring in the 88th minute when she fired a shot from 15 yards into the upper corner.
Overall Virginia outshot Liberty 29-3. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) and Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) each played a half in net for Virginia, while Christie Goodman-Williams and Mayer each played a half in net for the Flames (2-13-2) and had six and three saves respectively.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday as they host No. 1 North Carolina at Kl?ckner Stadium. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
