CHAPEL HILL, NC – Second-year men’s tennis player Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) won a pair of matches to advance to the round of 16 of the Omni-ITA Region II Championships Friday at the University of Virginia. Rozek is the only Cavalier to reach that round of play.
Rozek upset No. 14 seed Geoff Russell of William & Mary in the first round in three sets, rallying after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. In the second round, Rozek downed Jonathan Stokke of Duke in three sets, winning the third set in a tiebreaker.
In other singles action, Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes), the draw’s No. 8 seed defeated David Donn of Richmond in the first round before falling to Carl Wermee of South Carolina in the second round. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) fell in three sets in the first round to No. 5 seeded Scott Schnugg of Georgia Tech.
In doubles action, the team of Rizza and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) fell in the quarterfinals, after upsetting the tournament’s No. 1 seed on Thursday.
The action continues Saturday at the University of North Carolina.
