Virginia’s Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) took an insert from Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, NJ/Allentown) on a short corner and sent it right back to her, and Nicholson shoved the ball to the boards, breaking a 3-3 tie and helping the Cavaliers upset the Boston College Eagles 4-3 tonight in Charlottesville. The assist was Gerfen’s third of the night and came with 3:44 to go in regulation, helping the Cavaliers (10-8) rally from a 2-1 deficit. The Eagles (12-6), who were ranked 17th in the latest STX/NFHCA Poll, were led by Sara York , who had two goals in the contest, while Virginia’s Allie Flynn (Readington Township, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Nicholson both had a pair of goals for the Hoos.
The Cavaliers jumped on board first as they worked a ball to the top of the circle off a long corner. From there, Gerfen sent a ball to Flynn who was to the left of the stroke mark. Flynn punched the ball into the boards, putting the Cavailers up 1-0 11:25 into the game.
BC almost tied the game on a breakaway at the 16:45 mark as Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walshingham Academy) came out to cut off the angle but the shot got past her and headed for the endline. Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) sprinted from across the circle and knocked the ball off the line, preserving the lead. BC, however, was able to tie the game just before halftime as York picked up a loose ball in the circle and touched it into the cage with 7:41 to go in the half. The teams went into the break tied 1-1.
Thirteen minutes into the second half the Eagles drew a corner and on the play, Virginia Drozd took the insert on the short side and fired a shot to the cage. Kim French tipped it to the boards, putting the Eagles up for the first time in the game.
The Cavaliers responded immediately, advancing the ball upfield. Nicholson tackled the ball away as the Eagles tried to work the ball out, and drew a corner. On the play, Gerfen sent the ball over to Flynn, who fired a shot that was tipped up by a BC defender into the cage, tying the game at 2-2 with 20 minutes to play in regulation.
Virginia took the lead for a second time in the game as Lindsey Selfridge (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) intercepted a pass on the sideline and sent the ball to the middle for Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Miller took the ball into the circle and laid it off for Nicholson, who took the pass, pulled around the keeper, and pushed the ball to the boards to give Virginia a 3-2 lead with 9:44 to go. This time the Eagles responded right away as Tara Fernades brought the ball upfield on a counterattack. The initial BC entry to the circle was broken up but York was there for the loose ball, and she punched it into the cage to tie the game at 3-3 with 6:15 to play.
Virginia almost went ahead with four minutes to play as the forward line got behind Savoy, but Kerri Doherty tackled along the goalline and the Cavaliers sent the ball over the endline.
On the 16-yard hit, however, Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) intercepted a BC clearing pass and brought it into the circle, where she drew a corner, where Nicholson and Gerfen teamed up to put Virginia on top for good.
Carr started in the cage and made 10 saves.The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, Nov. 2 as they host ACC-rival and #2 Duke. Game time against the Blue Devils is 2:00 and will follow the BC-Radford game.
