Charlottesville, Va. – The University of Virginia has accepted a bid to play Pittsburgh from the Big East Conference in the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

The Cavaliers received the bid following their 35-21 win over Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon. The win is Virginia’s second in a row as the Cavaliers improve to 7-5 this season.

This is the second year in a row the Cavaliers have played in the Continental Tire Bowl. Virginia defeated West Virginia 48-22 in the bowl’s inaugural game last December.

This is Virginia’s 14th bowl appearance overall; the Cavaliers are 5-8 in bowl games.

Pittsburgh is 8-4 overall this season and finished third in the Big East with a 5-2 conference record.

The bowl match-up marks the first time the teams have met since an 18-7 Pittsburgh win in 1955. The Panthers won 26-0 in 1953 in the only other meeting of the two schools.
