Six Virginia Divers Compete In Georgia Diving Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams began competition in the three-day Georgia Diving Invitational Saturday (January 3) at the Gabrielsen Natatorium with fourth-year Peter Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) registering the Cavaliers’ best finish. Amstutz was 12th in the three-meter diving competition with 457.65 points.

Amstutz was eighth after the three-meter preliminaries with 477.80 points. He scored 184.65 in the semifinals and placed 12th in the finals with 457.65 points. Second-years Andrew Barber (Vienna, Va./Marshall) and Eric Kelley (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Christian School) also competed on the three-meter board. Barber was 16th in the prelims with 422.55 points, while Kelley was 21st with 398.30 points.

In the women’s one-meter diving competition, fourth-year Katie Prior (Dallas, Texas/Logos Academy) recorded UVa’s top finish as she was 25th in the preliminaries with 178.10 points. Second-year Gretchen Haughey (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) was two spots behind Prior in 27th place with 169.50 points. Second-year Patty Park (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) rounded out Virginia’s competitors in the one-meter diving competition in 30th place with 147.20 points.

The Georgia Diving Invitational continues Sunday (January 4) at 11:00 a.m. The men will compete on the one-meter board, while the women dive from three meters.
