HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team dropped a 32-10 decision to the #6 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in a first round match of the 2004 Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. UVa’s trio of Scott Moore (141), Tim Foley (165) and Michael Grogan (174) each posted a victory to record all 10 of the Cavaliers’ points. Nebraska jumped out to an early 8-0 lead through two bouts (125-pounds and 133-pounds) before setting up a showdown between Virginia’s #2 ranked Scott Moore against Nebraska’s #13 ranked Matt Murray at 141-pounds. Moore posted a 5-1 victory over Murray at 141 to make the team score 8-3 three bouts into the event. Moore’s win kept him undefeated on the season and improved his record to 26-0 overall. It was only the seventh match this year that he did not pin his opponent.
The Cornhuskers racked up a pair of wins at 149-pounds and 157-pounds to extend their lead to 18-3 before Virginia’s #18 ranked Tim Foley faced off against Nebraska’s #12 ranked Jacob Klein at 165-pounds. The Cavaliers then cut the score to 18-10 one bout later when Michael Grogan recorded a hard-fought 5-4 victory over James Pummel at 174-pounds to make the score 18-10. Grogan’s win was his eighth of the season.
However, Nebraska won the last three matches at 184, 197 and the heavyweight class to claim the dual match victory. UVa forfeited its match at 184-pounds.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 1-1 overall in dual matches this season. The Cavaliers will return to action next when UVa faces the Cleveland State Vikings in the next round of the 2004 Virginia Duals. The event is scheduled to take place at the Hampton Coliseum.
