MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – The No. 43 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team concluded its season-opening trip to Minnesota with a 5-2 win over No. 58 Northwestern on Saturday. The Cavaliers are now 2-0 on the season, after defeating No. 15 Minnesota Friday night in the season opener.

The Cavaliers fell behind early in the match 1-0 as the Wildcats (2-1) took the doubles point. The Virginia team of Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Stephen Rozek (Chardon, Ohio) won at No. 2, but Northwestern pulled out close wins at No. 1 and No. 3.

Virginia rebounded in singles, taking five of the six matches, all in straight sets. Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and Rozek led the way with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Miklo, Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.), and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) won at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6.

“Today was another good match this early in the season,” stated Virginia assistant coach Tony Bresky. “We are happy to get two wins over quality opponents to start the season. We need to continue to improve and learn from our mistakes, but hopefully that will translate into a solid season.”

The Cavaliers return to action on January 31 as they visit No. 54 Tennessee. Virginia opens the home season on February 7 with a doubleheader at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia will host Georgetown at 11:00 a.m. and Norfolk State at 5:00 p.m.
