CLEVELAND, Ohio. – The University of Virginia wrestling team had three individuals compete unattached at the 2004 Cleveland State Open. UVa’s trio of Will Durkee, Damian Johnson and Conor Manley each competed at 165-pounds. Durkee, the #1 seed in the event, defeated two seeded wrestlers and went 4-0 to take first place at 165-pounds. Johnson finished 3-2 and Manley went 1-2 in the competition.
Durkee got things started by winning his opening match over Maryland’s Adam Beytin with a 13-0 major decision victory before posting a 5-0 win over Central Michigan’s Nate Edwards in his next match. Durkee then posted a pair of wins in the semi-finals and finals to win the 165-pound championship. Durkee recorded a 1-0 decision over #4 seed Tim Scarl of Indiana in the semi-finals before earning a 7-1 victory over #2 seeded Brad Anderson of Central Michigan to win the 165-pound title.
After dropping his first match, Johnson won three consecutive bouts by defeating Clarion’s Jamie Durkin (MD, 13-4), MSU’s Grag Giodosik (8-2) and KSU’s Kurt Gross (12-6) before losing his second match.
Manley pinned James Amsley at 4:38 in his first match before dropping his final two bouts.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, January 31st when Virginia hosts a quad-meet with Kent State, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion at UVa’s Memorial Gymnasium. The event is scheduled to begin at noon.
