Virginia’s Wagner Named ACC Men’s Swimmer Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia fourth-year swimmer Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week as announced Wednesday (January 28). Wagner won three individual events and swam on two winning relays in a pair of Cavalier victories over the weekend.

In 11th-ranked Virginia’s 145-83 victory over Duke on January 24 in Durham, N.C., Wagner won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.26.

Wagner then led the Cavaliers to a 211-89 win over ACC rival and 22nd-ranked North Carolina on January 25 in Chapel Hill, N.C. He won two individual events and also swam on two winning relays as the Cavaliers improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the ACC. Wagner swam the leadoff leg in helping UVa set a season-best time in winning the 200 medley relay (1:30.82). He earned individual event victories in the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 49.39 and 1:45.83, respectively. Wagner wrapped up his outstanding afternoon by helping UVa win the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:01.43.

Wagner, a UVa men’s swimming program record 13-time All-American, holds the top time in the ACC this season in the 100 backstroke (49.38) and 200 backstroke (1:45.00). Wagner becomes the third Cavalier men’s swimmer to earn the ACC’s weekly award. Second-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) is a three-time recipient of the honor in 2003-2004, while fourth-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) earned the accolade once.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Sunday, February 1 when they host Pittsburgh in their final home dual meet of the season. Diving begins at 10:30 a.m. with the swimming portion of the meet commencing at noon at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
