The Game
Virginia stands at 12-5 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2003-2004 season. The Cavaliers had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 96-77 loss to seventh-ranked North Carolina (Jan. 24) in Chapel Hill, N.C. Wake Forest, ranked 19th in The Associated Press and 17th in the USAToday/ESPN polls, stands at 12-4 overall and 3-3 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons are coming off a 93-85 victory over Maryland (Jan. 29) in Winston-Salem, N.C. The win broke Wake’s four-game losing streak.

The Series vs. Wake Forest
Virginia led the all-time series with Wake Forest entering the 1990s, but the Demon Deacons have had the better of the Cavaliers the last decade and now lead the series 60-56. The Deacs have won 14 of the last 21 meetings and 19 of the 32 matchups since the 1989-90 season. UVa, however, has won six of the last 12 games, including an 85-75 win (Jan. 23) in the first meeting of the 2002-2003 season in Charlottesville. Wake Forest won the second matchup last year 75-71 (Feb. 23) in Winston-Salem. The home team has won the past six matchups in the series.

The Cavaliers split the 2001-2002 season series with Wake Forest with both teams winning on their home floor. UVa won the first meeting 86-74 (Jan. 15) in Charlottesville, while the Demon Deacons took a 92-70 decision (Feb. 17) in Winston-Salem. The two teams also split the 2000-2001 season series with both teams winning at home. Wake won the first meeting in the 2000-2001 season 96-73 (Jan. 2) in Winston-Salem in a matchup of two top 10 teams (UVa was ranked eighth in the AP poll and Wake was fourth). Virginia won the second meeting 82-71 (Feb. 3) in Charlottesville.

Virginia has not had much luck on the western end of Tobacco Road. The Cavaliers are 3-11 in the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and 11-32 all-time in Winston-Salem against Wake Forest. Virginia has lost its last three games at Wake Forest and eight of the last nine. UVa snapped a five-game losing streak to the Deacs at Lawrence Joel Coliseum with a 76-67 win in the 1999-2000 season (Jan. 30). Previously, the Cavaliers’ last victory at Wake was a 61-59 win on January 26, 1994.

Identical Records
Entering the 2003-04 season, Virginia boasted an all-time record of 1,283-991. Interestingly enough, Wake Forest lists its all-time record entering this season as 1,283-991. Both schools currently have 1,295 wins all-time.

Virginia vs. Ranked Wake Teams
The Cavaliers are 12-21 all-time vs. Associated Press ranked Wake Forest teams. Virginia is 9-5 vs. ranked Wake teams at home, but is just 1-12 vs. ranked Demon Deacon teams in away games. UVa’s lone win vs. a ranked Wake Forest team in Winston-Salem was back in the 1981-82 season when Virginia defeated the 18th-ranked Demon Deacons 69-66 on January 27, 1982.

Virginia’s last win over a ranked Wake Forest team was last season when it defeated the 17th-rated Deacons 85-75 at home (Jan. 23).
