COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The ninth-ranked Virginia men’s swimming and diving team dominated Maryland by winning 11 of 13 events in a 177-61 victory on Saturday (February 7) at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. The 18th-ranked Cavalier women registered four event victories in their 137-106 loss to 19th-ranked Maryland. The Virginia men improve to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It marks the fourth consecutive year UVa has gone undefeated in ACC dual meets. The Cavalier women fall to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the ACC with the loss.
Fourth-year Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) won two individual events to lead the Cavaliers to victory. Wagner won the 200 individual medley in a season-best time of 1:52.11 and also touched first in the 200 backstroke, clocking a time of 1:44.71 (NCAA B). Wagner joined forces with first-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split), fourth-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), and second-year Ethan McCoy (McMinnvile, Ore./McMinnville) to pick up a win in the 400 medley relay (3:20.31). Rogulj also swam to victory in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 1:59.21 (NCAA B). Haag and McCoy teamed up again to register a time of 3:02.74 and win the 400 freestyle relay with the help of fourth-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and first-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie). Individually, Kerpelman finished second to fourth-year teammate Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) in the 200 freestyle. Prichard led the Cavaliers’ sweep of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.26.
Second-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) notched another Virginia event victory in the 1000 freestyle, setting a pool record with a time of 9:04.27. Third-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:50.08. First-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) led Virginia’s top-four sweep of the 500 freestyle in a season-best time of 4:29.35. Third-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) touched less than half second later to take second. Virginia won both diving events to cap off its victory. Second-year Andrew Barber (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) won the one-meter event with a score of 279.45 points. Fourth-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) scored 328.12 points on the three-meter board to win that event.
Maryland’s Mark Hill won the 50 and 100 freestyle in times of 20.67 and 45.75 to register Maryland’s (4-8, 1-5 ACC) only event victories.
First-year Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) notched three of the four event victories by the Cavalier women in a 137-106 setback. Kelly led a UVa top-four sweep of the 1000 freestyle in a pool record time of 9:42.84. Second-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) finished second for the Cavaliers (9:49.70). Kelly touched in 2:01.59 (NCAA B) to register a victory in the 200 butterfly. Kelly rounded out her day with a first-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.84 (NCAA B). Virginia’s other victory came from first-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:15.99 (NCAA B). First-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) also clocked a NCAA B qualifying time with her second-place finish in the 200 free (1:49.65). First-year Erin Corgan (Marietta Ga./Marist) posted a NCAA B time of 2:03.11 in finishing third in the 200 individual medley.
Megan Knepper registered three event victories for Maryland (11-0, 6-0 ACC). Knepper won the 200 backstroke in a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:58.02 and swam legs on Maryland’s winning 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team returns to action February 18-21 when it hosts the 2004 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The UVa men will also host the ACC Championships February 25-28.
