WASHINGTON DC – Virginia women’s basketball claimed its third straight win on Sunday with a 52-45 non-conference win at Georgetown.

The Cavaliers improved to 12-10 overall, while Georgetown fell to 10-11 overall.

In the first half, the Hoyas built a ten-point lead, 23-13, with 5:47 to go. UVa then went on a 10-0 run to tie the game 23-23 on a bucket by Freshman Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio). Georgetown led at intermission, 25-23.

“It was like pulling teeth in the first half,” said Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan. “Georgetown was well-prepared. I thought we’d need to use our athleticism to win the game.”

In the second half, the teams battled back and forth for the first ten minutes until UVa reclaimed the lead for good, building up to a seven-point advantage over the last four minutes of play.

Junior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) was the only Cavalier in double-digits with ten second-half points. Junior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) added nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

“It was really big,” said Blue. “Winning this afternoon has helped us a lot for an NCAA bid. We’re really excited.”

“It was a huge game,” said Ryan. “Ranked teams have come in here and not won.”

Rebekkah Brunson was the only Hoya in double digits, netting a double-double of 19 points and 15 boards.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Georgetown, 50-39.

Virginia travels to Georgia Tech on Thursday, February 12th for a 7 p.m. contest.
