CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 29 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opened the ACC season in strong fashion, defeating NC State 7-0 Saturday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. With the victory, the Cavaliers keep their record perfect as they move to 7-0 on the year.
The Cavaliers opened the match strong, sweeping the three doubles matches. No. 24 ranked Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) won at No. 1, Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Stephen Rozek (Chardon, Ohio) won at No. 2, and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) completed the sweep with their win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Cavaliers completed the sweep by taking all six singles matches. Rozek, ranked No. 62 nationally, won at No. 2, and Cohen won at No. 6 to extend the Cavalier advantage to 3-0 before Rizza’s win at No. 3 clinched the Cavalier victory. Meythaler, Miklo, and Stewart closed out the sweep with straight set wins at No. 5, No. 4, and No. 1 respectively.
“I was really pleased with our focus and intensity right from the start,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We played excellent doubles and that carried into excellent singles play. We now have to focus on a big match Wednesday against a tough in-state opponent.”
