2004 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia will host the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The eight-team Women’s ACC Championships will be held Wednesday through Saturday, February 18-21 at the AFC. Finals commence each evening at 7:00 p.m. with prelims being held Thursday through Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Admission to the ACC Championships is free of charge.
Virginia, under the direction of 26th-year head coach Mark Bernardino, is the defending ACC champion as it won the 2003 ACC title with 710 points. North Carolina was second at last year’s ACC’s with 609 points, while Florida State and Maryland were third and fourth, respectively. Virginia has won the ACC Championship four times, while North Carolina has taken the ACC title 15 times in 25 tries. UVa and North Carolina have combined to win the last six ACC Championships with both schools taking the top spot three times.
Four teams are currently ranked within four spots of each other in the February13 College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 Poll, which should make for an exciting and closely contested ACC Championship. Maryland leads the way at 15th in the CSCAA Poll, while North Carolina is right behind in the 16th spot. Florida State is ranked 18th, while Virginia is 19th.
The 2004 ACC Championships feature six returning individual ACC champions from last year. Virginia leads the way with three returning champions. Fourth-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) is the returning ACC champion in the 100 butterfly. Second-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) won the 1650 freestyle last year, while second-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) was victorious in the 100 backstroke.
Florida State boasts two returning ACC champions. Senior Andree-Anne LeRoy won the 200 individual medley, while Emma Dutton captured the crown in the 100 breaststroke. North Carolina’s Kelly Weeks rounds out the returning individual champions as she won the 200 butterfly last year.
