PHILADELPHIA – The No. 33 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team had its five-match winning streak snapped on Sunday, falling to No. 45 Penn 4-3 at the Levy Tennis Pavilion in Philadelphia. The Cavalier fall to 6-2 on the season with the loss.
Virginia fell behind early by dropping the doubles point. The Cavaliers posted a win at No. 1 doubles by the No. 38 ranked team of Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) and Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.). However, the Quakers won at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the 1-0 lead.
The doubles point proved critical as the teams split the six singles matches. Virginia won three matches, all in straight sets. Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) won at No. 2 and sisters Marta and Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. The other three singles matches all went three sets, but the Quakers won all three to clinch the dual match.
The Cavaliers continue their road trip next weekend as they visit Blacksburg for a doubleheader. Virginia will play Virginia Tech at 9:00 a.m. and Radford at 4:00 p.m.
