2004 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Florida State finished the second day of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship in first place with a total of 233 points, leading North Carolina, which finished the day with 227 points.

Virginia finished the day in third place with 219 points with Maryland tallying 190 points to stand in fourth place. Duke finished the day in fifth (121 points), Georgia Tech in sixth (106) and NC State and Clemson tied for seventh with 105 points apiece.

The Virginia Cavaliers swept the 500-yard freestyle to begin finals action tonight. Sophomore Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) took first place with a pool record time of 4:43.24 (NCAA A), with freshmen teammates Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) and Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) claiming second and third place with times of 4:44.87 and 4:46.85, respectively.

“It was awesome,” said Rachael Burke, of UVa’s performance in the 500 freestyle. “It was actually more exciting that we went one-two-three. I didn’t even realize that I broke the pool record until someone told me. I think going in there the only thing that mattered to us is that we went one-two-three,”said Burke.

In the second event of the evening, the 200-yard individual medley, Duke sophomore Katie Ness placed first with a time of 2:00.27. Maryland’s Marina Mulyayeva touched the wall next at 2:01.01, with Florida State’s Andree-Anne Leroy rounding out the top three with a time of 2:02.77. Freshman Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) was UVa’s top finisher with a fifth-place time of 2:03.48.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Florida State’s Emma Dutton paced the race with a first-place time of 22.73. North Carolina’s Jessi Perruquet placed second with a time of 22.95, with Maryland’s Jenny Brian finishing third with a time of 23.31. Virginia freshman Shannon Hogan (Northville, Mich./Northville) grabbed fifth place with a time of 23.50.

The Florida State diving team had a tremendous evening, placing first (Tiffany Manning), second (Courtney McClow), third (Taryn Ignacio), fourth (Camille Akridge) and fifth (Brittany Lerew) on the one-meter board.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Florida State foursome of Emily Breen, Rachel Dong, Lisa How and Emma Dutton placed first with a time of 1:32.57. Virginia’s foursome of sophomore Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), senior Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon), Hogan, and freshman Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville).

“I think overall, we did very, very well. We knew that we were going to be in a little bit of a deficit because of the strength of Florida State and North Carolina’s diving,” said UVa head coach Mark Bernardino. “Our objective going into today was just to stay in the hunt, try to stay within twenty to twenty-five points of the leader and try to make our moves as the week wears on. We feel that our best days are yet to come and that we can close the gap some and try to be as competitive as we can for the next few days.”

The Championship will resume tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.
