CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Todd Billet scored 21 points and hit the game-winning3-point shot with 16 seconds left to give Virginia a 58-55 victory over Clemsonon Saturday.
The win gave coach Pete Gillen his 100th career victory with the Cavaliers,who had lost 18 of its previous 19 conference road games.
Billet’s 3-pointer from the left wing put Virginia (14-10, 4-9 AtlanticCoast Conference) up by one at 56-55. He hit a layup off a Tigers turnover withtwo seconds remaining to ice the victory.
Billet, who made 5-of-9 3-point attempts, was the only Virginia player toscore in double figures.
Clemson (10-14, 3-10) was led by junior forward Olu Babalola, who scored 19points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Clemson used 29 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive end, to outscore theCavaliers 12-0 in second chance points. The Tigers held a 28-20 lead athalftime, despite shooting just 34.4 percent from the field.
The Cavaliers were held to 29.6 percent shooting in the opening half and 12total rebounds.
Virginia matched its first half output in the first 7:33 of the second half,which included a 14-2 run sparked by four 3-pointers, to grab 40-35 lead.
The Tigers battled back and took a 54-51 lead on a shot basket by guardShawan Robinson with 1:58 left to play.
The Cavaliers cut it to one on a basket by Jason Clark with 35 secondsremaining, before Robinson hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Tigers atwo-point edge.
