CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team hosted a quad meet with the Cornell Big Red, The Citadel Bulldogs and the James Madison Dukes at UVa’s Memorial Gymnasium this afternoon. Each team faced the other three opponents in the event. Cornell, ranked #15 in the country, finished a perfect 3-0 in the event after defeating James Madison 48-0, The Citadel 33-6 and Virginia 33-10. The Citadel went 2-1 and defeated James Madison 43-6 and Virginia 24-18. UVa finished 1-2 and defeated JMU by the score of 39-6, while James Madison went winless and finished 0-3 in the competition.
In the first session of dual matches, Virginia won eight of the ten bouts against James Madison and won 39-6 in Dual I. UVa was highlighted by three falls it received from the trio of Scott Moore (141-pounds), Kevin Collier (197-pounds) and Michael Grogan (174-pounds). The Cavaliers’ Tim Foley also posted a technical fall victory over JMU’s Andrew Robarge to pace Virginia to a 33-point win.
In Dual II, Cornell also won eight of ten bouts and posted a 33-6 victory over The Citadel. The Big Red won the first five consecutive matches to build a 17-0 lead and cruised to the 27-point win. Cornell was highlighted by back-to-back falls by Travis Lee and Ryan Bridge at 133-pounds and 141-pounds, respectively. The Big Red’s Joe Mazzurco (165-pounds) and Tyler Baier (174-pounds) posted back-to-back major decision victories in the win.
In the second session of dual matches, The Citadel defeated Virginia 24-18 in Dual III in what proved to be the most competitive dual match of the afternoon. With the match score in favor of the Bulldogs at 21-18 with one bout remaining, The Citadel’s Travis Piccard earned a hard-fought 4-1 decision over UVa’s Aaron Martin at 141-pounds to put the wraps on the victory for the Bulldogs.
In Dual IV, Cornell rolled to a 48-0 shutout victory over James Madison. The Big Red claimed wins in all ten weight classes that included four falls by Cornell’s Dan Miracola (174-pounds), Jerry Rinaldi (184-pounds), Bridget at 141 and Justin Lijo (149-pounds).
In the third and final session of the dual matches, Cornell put the finishing touches on its undefeated run in the event and posted a 33-10 victory over Virginia in Dual V. After the Cavaliers and Big Red split the first two bouts of the dual, Cornell went on to win the next six consecutive matches and rolled to a 23-point win. The Big Red’s duo of Baier at 174 and Matt Greenberg (197-pounds) each posted a fall, while UVa’s Moore picked up his second fall of the day to increase his NCAA-leading total to 31 on the season. He also improved his overall record to 44-0 while adding a technical fall to his win totals.
In Dual VI, The Citadel recorded a 43-6 victory over James Madison. The Dukes won the first two matches at 157 and 165 thanks to a pair of decisions by Derick Schoenly and Matt Yonkoski to take a 6-0 lead, but it was all Bulldogs the rest of the way as The Citadel won the final eight bouts of the match to claim a 36-point victory. After JMU forfeited back-to-back matches at heavyweight and 125, the Bulldogs won the final three matches by fall after the trio of Sean Markey (133-pounds), Levi Duyn (141-pounds) and Nolan Roggenkamp (149-pounds) each pinned their opponents.
Virginia finishes the regular season portion of its 2003-04 schedule with a record of 10-7 overall, 3-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers will now have off until UVa’s hosts the 2004 Mat Jam featuring the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southern Conference Wrestling Championships. The event is scheduled for March 6th at Virginia’s University Hall.
