Virginia’s Amy Appelt scored a career-tying high six goals while goalie Andrea Pfeiffer had six saves and an assist, and Nikki Lieb had six ground balls as Virginia defeated the Commodores 14-10 in the campaign opener for both squads. Meredith Lazarus had a career high three goals in posting her first career hat trick and Morgan Thalenberg added a hat trick and led Virginia with three draw controls. Ashley Dodson had two draw controls and two ground balls and a caused turnover in her first career start.
The Commodores got on the board just 1:11 into the match as Lauren Peck fed Kate Hickman for the opening score. Courtney Young controlled the next draw and as Virginia worked the ball in the attack, Lazarus picked up an errant pass and drove to the cage, drawing an 8-meter attempt. She converted, tying the game at 2:10. Vanderbilt won the ensuing draw but Connors picked off a pass in the arc and after a good clear, Appelt rolled the crease and scored to put the Hoos up 2-1. Peck then scored twice in 2:30 to put the Commodores up 3-2. VU won the draw again but Lazarus scooped up a ball in the midfield and Virginia got the ball to Thalenberg, who drove to the cage and scored, tying the game. The Commodoes went up by two as Jess Roguski converted a Peck feed and Michelle Allen scored on an 8-meter to give VU a 5-3 lead with 12:25 to play in the half.
Dodson controlled the next draw and got the ball to Caitlin Banks, who threw a cross-field pass to Ashleigh Haas, who had taken the draw for the Cavaliers. Haas took the ball to the arc where she was fouled, putting her on the 8-meter. Haas scored, pulling Virginia within one. A Molly Urlock caused turnover gave the Cavaliers possession deep in their defensive zone and Virginia cleared the ball upfield where Lazarus was detained from making a cut, giving her a center hash. She converted the 8-meter, tying the game with 7:34 to play in the half. The teams entered the break tied at 5-5.
The Commodores won the opening draw of the second half but dropped the ball in the arc where Lieb scooped it up and started a clear. At the other end of the field, Connors was fouled on her drive to the cage and scored on the free position, putting the Cavaliers up. Lazarus won the ensuing draw cleanly in the midfield and took it straight to the goal, scoring 12 seconds after Connors to give the Hoos a 7-5 lead.
Again Vanderbilt won the draw but Elizabeth Pinney caused a turnover in the midfield and Cary Chasney scooped up the loose ball and Virginia set their attack. Appelt got the ball in the arc, worked around, and scored to put the Cavaliers up by three in the 35th minute. Another Lieb ground ball in the arc started the next scoring play as she fed the ball to Jess Wasilewski, who was making her first career appearance in a Cavalier uniform. Wasilewski raced upfield before feeding Appelt at the restraining line. Appelt drove to the cage, scoring and completing her hat trick.
The Virginia defense held again as Pfeiffer made a save and on the clear, Pfeiffer led Appelt with a clear to the far restraining line. Appelt took the ball and raced in, scoring and giving Pfeiffer her first career point with a Virginia goal at 42:44.
With the Cavaliers up 10-5, Virginia spread the offense and Appelt took a challenge from the top, scoring her fourth goal in a span of 12 minutes to give UVa an 11-5 lead. Lieb won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers again spread the offense. Banks attempted a pass to Thalenberg, who was fouled on the play, and Thalenberg scored off the 8-meter to give the Cavaliers a 12-5 lead.
Vanderbilt then went on a mini-run, starting with a Peck goal at 10:25, breaking a 32-minute scoreless drought. Allen assisted on a pair of goals and scoring one herself to pull the Commodores within three at 12-9, but Dodson won the draw and Appelt scored her sixth goal of the game at the 56:25 mark to give Virginia some room. An Allen goal one minute later brought Vanderbilt within three again, but Pfeiffer made her sixth save of the game on a free position shot and Dodson scooped up the loose ball. The Cavaliers worked the ball upfield to Thalenberg, who notched Virginia’s fourteenth goal with 50 seconds to play.
Appelt now has one game in each of her first three seasons with six goals, and now has 117 career goals, moving her up to #8 all-time on the Cavalier charts. She stands at #6 all-time in points with 163.
Virginia returns home to host Syracuse on Feb 28 at Klockner Stadium.
