Men’s Golf Tied for Seventh in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Virginia men’s golf team shares a tie for seventh place at 292 (+4) after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The Cavaliers stand second among the five ACC teams in the 18-team field.

ACC rival Clemson is the tournament leader after an opening round 281 (-7). Oklahoma has a firm hold on second at 283 (-5), while Minnesota and Texas are tied for third at 288 (E).

Texas’ Jason Hartwick is the individual leader, firing a first-round 66 (-6). Jack Ferguson of Clemson is one stroke back at 67 (-5). Minnesota’s Justin Smith shot 68 (-4) to round out the top three.

Cavalier freshman Dan McGurk (Woodlands, Texas) and sophomore Eamonn McLoughlin (Amityville, N.Y.) both shot 72 (E) to tie for 15th overall with 12 other golfers. Sophomore Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) is tied for 29th after shooting a 73 (+1). Junior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) shot 75 (+3) to tie for 46th. Senior Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) rounded out the scoring for the Cavs with an 83 (+11) to tie for 88th.

Action continues tomorrow at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course at 7 a.m.
