CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player Andrew Dobies (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) became the first UVa player selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft when he was chosen in the third round as the 95th pick overall by the Boston Red Sox.
With his selection, Dobies became the 55th total selection and the 51st player from UVa selected in the MLB Draft. He is also the 33rd player from Virginia to be chosen in the draft over the last 16 seasons (since 1989). Dobies became the first UVa player drafted in two years (since 2002) and is the highest Cavalier to be drafted since the 1997 season when Greg Withhelder was selected in the third round by the Minnesota Twins.
Only three UVa players have ever been drafted higher (first or second round) than Dobies since Virginia’s first pick in the 1966 MLB Draft. Those players were Brian Buchanan (1st Round by the New York Yankees) in 1994, and Seth Greisinger (1st Round by the Detroit Tigers) and Jason Sekany (2nd Round by the Boston Red Sox) in 1996.
In 2004, Dobies was named a Second Team All-ACC selection and was tabbed the ACC Pitcher of the Week on March 29th. He served as one of UVa’s weekend starters in the pitching rotation. Dobies started 16 games on the mound this season and posted a record of 6-2 with a 3.41 ERA. He struck out a team-high 109 batters and held opposing batters to a .257 batting average through a team-high 108.1 innings pitched. Dobies also pitched two complete games this season.
Dobies’ 16 starts this season ties him for the single season school-record mark. His 109 strikeouts in 2004 ranks fourth all-time at UVa for a single season mark and his 108.1 innings pitched was the third highest single season total for a Virginia pitcher.
For his three-year career, Dobies has started 28 of the 45 games he has appeared in and pitched 210.1 innings. He posted a record of 12-6 with a 4.23 ERA and struck out 193 batters while pitching three complete games. Dobies’ 193 career strikeouts ranks ninth all-time in career at Virginia.
