CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s soccer head coach George Gelnovatch has announced the 2004 UVa men’s soccer schedule. Virginia’s 2004 schedule features a minimum of 21 event dates that includes 18 regular season games, two exhibition contests and at least one contest in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Of Virginia’s 18 regular season matches, the Cavaliers will play 12 contests at home, five games on the road and one contest on a neutral site before competing in the ACC Tournament.
Prior to the start of the 2004 regular season portion of its schedule, the Cavaliers will compete in the Blue/Orange exhibition match on August 21st before Virginia travels to Columbia, S.C. to face South Carolina in an exhibition contest on August 26th. UVa and USC also played an exhibition contest last season (August 23, 2003) in Charlottesville that ended in a 0-0 tie.
Following its exhibition match with South Carolina, Virginia will kick-off the regular season portion of its schedule by hosting the 2004 Virginia Soccer Classic (September 3rd & 5th). Joining the Cavaliers in the field of teams will be Maryland, Marshall and Long Island. Virginia will face Marshall on September 3rd before facing-off against Long Island on September 5th. UVa and Maryland will not meet in the tournament.
The following weekend (September 10th & 12th), the Cavaliers will travel to St. Louis, Mo. to compete in a tournament hosted by Saint Louis University. Virginia will face Cincinnati on September 10th (UVa’s lone regular season neutral site contest) before meeting Saint Louis on September 12th at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
After its back-to-back weekends of tournament play, UVa will dive into ACC action in two of its next three contests. Virginia will play its first conference game of the season on September 17th in Winston-Salem, N.C. against Wake Forest before returning home to face Manhattan in a non-conference match on September 21st. The Cavaliers will then hit the road for another ACC contest against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on September 26th.
Virginia will play a season-high five consecutive home games at Klöckner Stadium from September 29th – October 12th, beginning with the University of Maryland at Baltimore County (UMBC) on 9/29. After an ACC contest against N.C. State on October 2nd, UVa will wrap-up its five-game homestand with three consecutive non-conference games against Liberty (October 6th), Davidson (October 9th) and St. Francis (October 12th).
Virginia will then travel to Clemson, S.C. to face Clemson in an ACC match on October 17th before returning to Charlottesville for three consecutive home games. The Cavaliers will face Longwood in a non-conference game on October 20th and host Duke in an ACC match on October 23rd before closing out the homestand with a non-conference match against Old Dominion on October 27th.
Virginia will play its final regular season road game on October 30th against ACC-newcomer Virginia Tech before UVa closes out the ACC and regular season portion of its schedule with a home game against Maryland on November 5th.
The Cavaliers will travel to Cary, N.C. to compete in the 2004 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship (November 10th, 12th and 14th). Virginia will look to defend its ACC tournament title after winning the ACC Championship last season (2003). UVa has played in the last five consecutive ACC Tournament Finals.
The 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship begins on November 19 and will continue through December 12th. The NCAA First Round (November 19-20), Second Round (November 24th), Third Round (November 27-28) and Quarterfinals (December 3-5) will be held on campus sites. The 2004 Men’s College Cup will take place on December 10th (NCAA Semifinals) and December 12th (NCAA Finals) in Carson, Calif. at the Home Depot Center.
