SALEM, Va. – University of Virginia softball players Jessica Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Jenn Wynn (Herndon, Va./Herndon) along with assistant coach Karen Lemcke have been selected to play for a college all-star team that will compete against the United States Olympic softball team on June 18. The game will be played at the James Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va. at 8:00 p.m.
The U.S. Olympic softball team is coming to Salem as part of USA Softball’s “Aiming for Athens” tour. The tour is in the second of two phases leading up to the Athens Games. The Olympic team participated in various high profile tournaments against college teams and now is in the grassroots portion of the tour, making stops in 22 cities across the country, including Salem.
The Olympians will be playing a team made up of players with ties to Virginia. In addition to the team members from UVa, there are five players with ties to Virginia Tech on the squad, while Hokie head coach Scot Thomas will direct the college all-stars. A pair of players represents Longwood, while Roanoke College and Radford both have one player on the team. Several players who played high school softball in Virginia and went on to play college ball outside the commonwealth will also play for the college all-stars.
