NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Virginia won 64 percent of its intercollegiate athletic contests in 2003-04 to win the 26th annual Virginia Sports Information Director’s Association Division I All-Sport Survey, VaSIDA officials announced on Thursday.
This is the eighth time Virginia has won the overall title. Virginia won 67 percent of its men’s contests and 62 percent of its women’s. The Cavaliers captured the women’s NCAA lacrosse national championship and the women’s rowing championship in the varsity four event, captured a school-best six Atlantic Coast Conference titles, and a regional championship. Virginia led the state in national Top 20 team finishes. The Cavaliers tied for sixth at the NCAA women’s rowing championship, 13th at the men’s swimming & diving, 16th in wrestling, 19th in women’s swimming and diving and reached the round of 16 in men’s tennis and in men’s soccer. In football, Virginia defeated Pittsburgh in the Continental Tire Bowl title.
Virginia Commonwealth, last year’s champion was second overall at .617, and Richmond was third at .590. VCU led all Virginia Division I schools in men’s percentage at .707, while Richmond’s women’s programs won .641 percent.
William and Mary won its fourth straight USAG Collegiate National Championship in men’s gymnastics, while the Tribe’s Ramon Jackson won the NCAA national championship in the parallel bars. Old Dominion’s Anna Tunnicliffe captured her second straight women’s singlehanded sailing national championship.
Virginia and William and Mary led the state with six conference titles. UVA won in women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, men’s soccer, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving, and men’s tennis. William and Mary won captured titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field, women’s soccer and women’s tennis.
Overall, Virginia Division I schools compiled a 1982-1902-62 record for a winning percentage of .510. Men’s teams were 983-917-29 (.525) while the women’s teams finished up at 999-985-33 (.503). The survey began in 1978-79 and includes winning percentages of only those sports with NCAA sponsored championships. Old Dominion won seven of the first eight titles, then again in 1993-94, 1995-96 and 1998-99. Virginia won five straight years from 1988-89 to 1992-93, then again in 1996-97 and 1997-98. George Mason won in 1986-87, and James Madison in 1981-82, 1987-88 and 1994-95. Hampton University won in 2000 and 2001, while Richmond took the title in 2002 and VCU in 2003.
