CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia junior Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) has qualified for the 2004 U.S. Amateur to be played August 16-22 at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., his home state.
In the local qualifier, Tilley was the top finisher in East Norwalk, Conn., firing a five-under 67.
As a sophomore last season at Virginia, Tilley paced UVa with a 74.94 stroke average. His best finish of the season was a 218 (+2) to tie for eighth at the Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic. He fired a season low, two-under 70 in the opening round and a one-under 71 in the final round of play. Tilley tied for 42nd at the ACC Championship with a 232
Last summer, Tilley captured the Metropolitan Golf Association IKE Stroke Play championship.
The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or lower. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
The University of Virginia men’s golf team opens the 2004-05 season at the East Tennessee State’s Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sept.11-12.
